-
- 1.0 What is drum corps?
-
- Drum corps is an abbreviation for drum and bugle corps. During
- the competitive season, corps from all across the US and Canada perform
- to crowds of up to 35,000. The closest kind of group to a drum corps that
- is not a drum corps is the marching band, but the performance levels of
- the top drum corps is in general higher than top marching bands.
-
- The music. Drum corps do NOT play Sousa marches or "um-pa-pa"
- music. The repertoires of modern drum corps consist of classical,
- jazz, contemporary, and symphonic literature. Broadway musicals are
- also popular. Some organizations tend to play a single kind of music.
- For example, the Concord Blue Devils tend to play jazz each year, while
- the Phantom Regiment plays classical music each year. Gone are the days
- of sitting on the 50 yardline playing the theme from "Rocky" and Stars
- and Stripes Forever (which used to be common in both drum corps and
- marching bands). The music is arranged by professionals. The brass and
- percussion instructors are among the best in the country. There are
- many college music professors involved in the activity.
-
- The drill. Drills are also designed by professional artists and
- choreographers. Smooth curves during delicate passages and sharp angles
- during aggressive passages accent the presentation of the music. Color
- and dance also add to the interpretation of the music. The drill and the
- music are integrated into a whole (unlike many field shows one sees at a
- typical halftime show) in a constantly moving show.
-
- There are three sections of a drum corps: the brass, the percussion,
- and the color guard. In part 5 of the FAQ, a more detailed description is
- given on what type of instrumentation is allowed in the brass and percussion
- sections. The color guard (a misnomer in today's performances) is the group
- of performers who handle the flags and other props that visually enhance the
- performance. They typically do quite a bit of dancing and equipment work.
-
- Forget about any experiences you've had with high school and college
- marching bands. Drum corps is a completely different activity, and any
- music-lover ought to consider seeing a show towards the end of the season.
-
- 1.0.1 DCI and DCA
-
- There are many organizations devoted to promoting and organizing the
- drum and bugles corps activity world-wide. Many of these are listed below
- in section 1.2. But the two major organizations in North America are DCI
- (Drum Corps International) and DCA (Drum Corps Associates).
-
- DCI supervises the major junior drum and bugle corps circuit in North
- America. Junior drum and bugle corps are restricted to members 21 years of
- age or younger. Most drum and bugle corps in fall into this general catagory.
- DCI corps march in the DCI circuit during the months of July and August every
- year. The DCI season culminates with the DCI World Championships.
-
- DCA differs from DCI in a number of respects. DCA corps are often
- called Senior corps and are open to people of any age. DCA runs its own
- circuit, too which culminates in the DCA Championships over Labor Day
- weekend each year. In this FAQ, the information on DCA corps has been
- grouped together in Section 6. The DCA information is maintained and
- updated by Martin Cross (crossm@pt.Cyanamid.Com).
-
- 1.0.2 Drum Corps International
-
- The official organization devoted to organizing the junior drum and
- bugle corps activity in North America is called Drum Corps International
- (DCI). DCI and its Board of Directors plan the summer performance
- schedules, coordinate judging, host regional competitions, and run the
- DCI World Championships during the third week of August every summer.
- It is roughly analogous to the NCAA for college athletics. DCI was
- organized in 1972 as a reaction to the "harsh" way the VFW (Veterans of
- Foreign War) and AL (American Legion) were governing the activity.
-
- DCI publishes a bimonthly newsletter called DCI Today. It is a must
- for any drum corps fan. Tickets to any DCI Regional or the DCI Championships
- can be ordered by calling the number listed below.
-
- DCI Today
- P.O. Box 548, Lombard, IL 60148-0548
- 1-800-344-2772 or 708-495-9866
- Six bi-monthly issues
- 1st class - $12.00/yr
- 4th class bulk rate - $6.00 (lifetime subscr. - delivery not guaranteed)
-
- 1.0.3 Drum Corps World
-
- Drum Corps World (DCW) is the only independent publication devoted
- to the drum and bugle corps activity world-wide. The editor is Steve Vickers,
- and DCW prides itself on providing nearly complete coverage of drum corps
- competitions every summer as well as news during the winter. The magazine
- is expensive due to it limited circulation but well worthwhile for the serious
- drum corps fan.
-
- Drum Corps World
- P.O. Box 8052, Madison, WI 53708-8052
- 1-800-554-9630
- 20 issues per year
- 1st class - $63.00/yr
- 2nd class - $45.00/yr
-
- 1.0.4 Scorelines
-
- Every summer, several drum and bugle corps set up their own individual
- scoreline to allow drum corps fans to get daily updates on scores. These
- scorelines are free except for any long distance costs. In addition, DCI
- has a telephone number 1-900-CALL-DCI that can also be used for daily score
- updates. The cost for this call is $1.50/1st min, $0.95 for each additional
- minute.
-
- Here are some of the scoreline phone numbers:
-
- DCI Scoreline 1-900-CALL-DCI

- 1.1 Drum corps on-line
-
- 1.1.1 History of drum corps on-line
-
- The first on-line drum corps newletter that I am aware of was called
- Off-The-Line (The Marching Arts List). It was administered by several
- people, most recently by DJ Foremsky. In March of 1992, Michael Fath
- (mjfath@midway.uchicago.edu) formed an alt newgroup called alt.drumcorps.
- The success of alt.drumcorps resulted in the demise of Off-The-Line, since
- most people on the list had access to UseNet and discussion moved there.
- After nine months of activity, readers of alt.drumcorps held an RFD and CFV
- to create a mainstream newsgroup for drumcorps discussion. The vote was run
- by Phil Earnhardt and Michael Fath and held during November, 1992. The vote
- was successful and two groups were formed in the hierachy Rec.arts.marching.*.
- Rec.arts.marching.drumcorps and Rec.arts.marching.misc were created on UseNet
- in December, 1992. As of August, 1994, over 16,000 messages have posted to
- Rec.arts.marching.drumcorps, and the volume continues to increase monthly.
-
- 1.1.2 Rec.arts.marching.drumcorps (RAMD)
-
- The home for most all drum corps discussion on the InterNet is the
- newsgroup Rec.arts.marching.drumcorps. The newsgroup is often abbreviated
- RAMD. There are four other newsgroups in the rec.arts.marching.* hierarchy.
- They are:
- rec.arts.marching.colorguard
- rec.arts.marching.band.college
- rec.arts.marching.band.high-school
- rec.arts.marching.misc
- If you are interested in any other of the marching arts besides drum corps,
- check out these related newsgroups.
-
- 1.1.3 Drumcorps mailing list
-
- A Drumcorps-Digest mailing list was created by Mark Baushke
- (mdb@cisco.com) to allow people without access to UseNet to receive a daily
- digest of articles that appear in alt.drumcorps or rec.arts.marching.drumcorps
- and post articles to alt.drumcorps and to rec.arts.marching.drumcorps.
-
- In order to receive the drumcorps digest, you must send a subscription
- request to drumcorps-digest-request@cisco.com. Other administrative requests,
- such as to be removed from the list or to have your address changed, should
- also be directed to drumcorps-digest-request@cisco.com.
-
- In addition, an address has been created which will post email sent
- to it to rec.arts.marching.drumcorps. This address is:
- rec-arts-marching-drumcorps@cisco.com. Remember that all administrative
- requests should be sent to drumcorps-digest-request@cisco.com, NOT
- to rec-arts-marching-drumcorps@cisco.com.
-
- Any replies you wish to make to newsgroup postings you read in
- the digest can be made simply by sending e-mail to the appropriate address.
- The digest software runs an NNTP reader client once per day which will read
- all previously unread articles in the group and package them as a single
- e-mail message. If there are no new articles, or the news machine is
- down, then you will not get any articles that day. If you have not seen a
- digest in more than three days, you might want to send e-mail to the
- administrivia address to have me look into any problems.
-
- 1.1.4 FTP site for drum corps information
-
- An anonymous FTP site has been established by Kelly Hall
- (hall@bert.cs.byu.edu) for keeping the rec.arts.marching.drumcorps FAQ,
- drumcorps GIFs, scores, and much other information. This site has quite
- an impressive collection, and the quantity of information here grows
- every day. If you are looking for any drum corps information, check out
- this site before posting your qeustion on RAMD. The information for
- this site is:
-
- Name: lal.cs.byu.edu
- IP: 128.187.2.182
- login: anonymous
- password: <your email address>
- dir: pub/dci
-
- This site can also be reached through the World Wide Web (WWW).
- The address is http://lal.cs.byu.edu/dci/dci.html
- Contact Kelly Hall for more information.
-
- The most recent version of the FAQ can also be found at the
- anonymous FTP site: rtfm.mit.edu in the directory
- /pub/usenet-by-group/rec.arts.marching.drumcorps/
-
- 1.1.6 Cybercorps
-
- What is Cybercorps?
-
- Cybercorps is simply a group of people on the Internet who have
- a love for drum corps. We have gotten together and formed a "virtual
- corps" whose purpose is to have fun, support drum and bugle corps, and
- meet with other members as the opportunity arises. Cybercorps is real,
- we have a drum major, all the basic instruments, and a staff.
- Cybercorps exists for those who have aged out, did not get to march,
- can't march, or do actually march in a DCI corps, but still want to share
- an allegiance with other fellow RAMDers. We (the members and staff)
- basically meet at DCI shows by wearing T-shirts printed each year. That
- way you can put a face to the names you see flying about on the net every
- day you read your news.
- The Cybercorps list is kept by Richard Lapham at
- Richard.Lapham@Atlantaga.ncr.com.
-
- Does Cybercorps have auditions?
- Yes. People who wish to join Cybercorps should email the following
- information to Richard at Richard.Lapham@Atlantaga.ncr.com
- 1) your full name (as you'd like it to appear on something
- semi-official, like a T-shirt).
- 2) a valid EMAIL address.
- 3) a position (instrument, guard or staff, etc) for you to fill.
-
- What can I play/spin/etc?
- It doesn't matter what you know for an instrument or guard equipment.
- Heck, people who in reality play horns could be in the guard, and vice-versa.
- Thus, you aren't limited to a piece of equipment you already know! Pick
- something you always wish you could do.
-
- Where does Cybercorps meet?
- Cybercorps has a Virtual Rehearsal Site at a GlobalMush site
- at the University of Pennsylvania. Here's how to find this site:
-
- DIRECTIONS TO CYBERCORPS VIRTUAL REHEARSAL SITE
-
- Telnet to 128.151.220.22 4201. This will connect you to GlobalMUSH, the
- site of Cybercorps open houses, rehearsals, and bull sessions. You will
- get a welcome message from the Wizards--those who run GlobalMush on the
- machine at the University of Pennsylvania. You will also get a set of
- introductory commands. If you don't want to commit yourself but wish to
- look around first, type: connect global tourist. This will allow you
- access as an observer, but you can't participate in the goings on. If
- you want to be a full-fledged player, type: connect <name> <password>.
- Feel free to use a nickname (The first two CyberCorps members on Global,
- Brooke Phelps and Vince Lamb, go by rowan and pervert, respectively),
- but be prepared to explain it if you are pressed. Keep your name as one
- word 12 characters or shorter (use capitalization or punctuation to
- separate parts)--same with the password.
-
- Now you are connected. You will find yourself in "The Floaty Place",
- the virtual ether outside of Global itself. There will be a nice long
- message explaining where you are and what to do about it.
- Unfortunately, there are no carriage returns in it, so if your
- communications program can't wrap lines, you will lose everything past
- 80 characters and you are TSOL. Here are the important parts of it.
- First, some experienced MUSHers think it's great fun to (1) move you
- around the MUSH at their random whim (This happened to me the first time
- and I was only slightly amused!), (2) put words into your mouth when you
- are signed on, and/or (3) pretend to be you when you're not logged on.
- To prevent these things from happening to your character, type: @lock
- me=me<CR>, @elock me=me<CR>, and @set me=nospoof<CR> (<CR>=Carriage
- Return/Line Feed). Second, you might want to know who is signed on. To
- learn that, type: who. You will get a report on who is signed on (look
- for rowan and pervert, or any other CyberCorps members' names you know)
- and where they are. Don't be too worried about the *UNFINDABLE*
- reports--those are experienced MUSHers who just want to be mysterious.
- Third, you want to get out of "The Floaty Place" and away from this
- annoying message that says: "I am mighty and I must wee!" (ignore it;
- it's just there to piss you off). Type: go out or go south. That will
- send you to The Main Nexus, the entry point to GlobalMUSH itself.
-
- Upon entering The Main Nexus, you will get a description of the room,
- including a list of all the players (except you) currently there. There
- are generally a bunch of players hanging out there. To talk to them,
- type: "<what you want to say>. You will get an echo of you say, "<what
- you want to say>." (The " command is commonly known as "emote"). To
- pretend to do something (known as "posing"), type: :<what you want to
- do>, where what follows the colon is a sentence minus your name as the
- subject. You will get an echo of <your character's name> <does what you
- want it to>. To send a private message to one of the player's in the
- room, type: w <name of character you are sending to>=<message you want
- to send>. This is known as "whispering". If you want to send a message
- to someone you know is logged on but isn't in the room, type: page <name
- of character you are sending to>=<message you want to send>. If you
- wish to send a message to a player not logged on, type: @mail
- <player>=<message>. If you want to see who you are talking to, type look
- <character> or examine <character>. To go someplace, type: go <place>.
- By the way, some doors are one-way and lead you to rooms with no exits.
- If you ever get stuck in one of these annoying places, type: go home.
- This will send you back to The Floaty Place. That should be enough to
- get you started. For more commands, type: help commands, then help
- <command name/symbol>
-
- To get to the CyberCorps Moonbase from the Main Nexus, you can follow
- two routes. The first is: go fantasy, go lp, go ccm. The second is: go
- sfn, go cm, go ccm. You will then be in the CyberCorps Moonbase, the
- virtual rehearsal site of CyberCorps. Go to the Corps Hall and be sure
- to compliment Brooke/rowan on its description--she built it and almost
- everything attached to the Callisto Moonbase, which is her domain.
- Attend rehearsal, hang out, or complain about the instructors/repertoire
- /drill/food/chaperones, etc. :-). Whatever, have fun!
-
- When you are done, type: QUIT.
-

- Notes from Quarterfinals:
- It started to rain during the Marauders and drizzled the whole night
- through. When Santa Clara took the field, DCI annonced that the show was
- being stopped and the final four corps would be seeded for Semi's on Friday.
- Needless to say the crowd was very angry and screamed for SCV to perform
- anyway. After a few minutes they left the field. About ten minutes later
- Cavies pit came out of the tunnel and the few thousand of us that were left in
- the stand went nuts. The Final three corps all did a standstill of there
- entire production. The crowd was very appreciative that the corps came out
- and performed for the fans even though the show had been cancelled. Phantom
- Regiment did compete but the score wasn't announced.

-
- 5.0 The words "drum corps"
-
- Usage note: "drum corps" (singular) can refer to a particular drum
- corps (e.g. "I haven't seen a drum corps in years.") or it can refer to the
- entire activity (e.g. "The future of drum corps looks promising."). It
- also can be used as an adjective (e.g. "I'm going to the next drum corps
- show in the area."). The plural "drum corps" only refers to greater than
- one drum corps.
-
- "Corps" is pronounced like KOR (like the word "core"). The plural
- of "corps" is spelled "corps", but is pronounced KORZ. The most frequent
- error in spelling "corps" is to leave off the 's'.
-
- 5.1 Number of members allowed
- The number of members allowing depends on the Class that the corps
- is competing in. The Open Class corps may field up to 128 performers
- (including the drum majors). This number comes from the fact that
- when the rule was devised, this was the average number of people that
- could fit on three buses. The idea was to minimize the travelling
- costs for the corps. Division II corps may field up to 90 people and
- Division III corps may field up to 60 members.
- These are the formal differences between the classes of drum
- corps, but in reality the Open Class corps tend to be the ones that
- attract the better instructors, go on longer tours, and generally
- perform better, while the Division II and III corps tend to be more
- oriented towards being a youth activity. Note that these are
- generalities so that any particular corps could be anywhere in the
- spectrum of youth activity or innovators in performance art.
-
- 5.2 Corps' budgets
- Typical numbers for an Open Class corps are $250,000 to $500,000
- per year. This amount largely depends on how far they travel during
- the season, how expensive the props and uniforms are for the year, and
- what kind of staff they hire.
- Division II and III corps spend much less than these amount
- (probably much less than $100,000) because they tend to travel only
- locally or for shorter periods of time. Also, because they are
- smaller, the cost to produce a show is smaller.
-
- 5.3 Fundraising
- Since drum corps are not associated with any school (typically
- they are non-profit corporations), they must do their own fund-raising.
- Fund-raising activities include all sorts of events. The
- Bluecoats from Canton, OH, for example, hold a mini-car race in downtown
- Canton which raises all sorts of money (as well as publicizing the corps
- name). Funds also come from corps membership fees, as they are called.
- Fees can range between $200-$1,000 depending on the corps (if you
- calculate that out, that could be as much as $50,000).
- The Blue Devils from Concord, CA, take in about 70% of their $1.5
- million operating funds from bingo (the $1.5 million goes to 7
- different performing groups in the Blue Devils organization).
- Prize money is another source of income. The top corps get
- something like $2500 per performance, which adds up to about $75,000
- total in a season. Many corps sponsor their own shows, which raises
- some more money. Donations and boosters also contribute to the money needed.
-
- 5.4 How far do the corps travel? How many competitions? How long is
- the season? When are the Championships?
- A typical Open Class corps travels somewhere between 10,000 and
- 15,000 miles during the season, performing in 25 to 35 shows in an
- eight or nine week period. The season usually begins in the second
- week in June (the eastern corps tend to start a little later) and
- culminates in the DCI World Championships, which are held on the second
- or third Saturday in August. In 1995, Finals will be held in Buffalo,
- NY on August 12th.
-
- 5.5 How can I catch the Championships on TV?
- In past years, PBS would broadcast the tape that DCI makes of the
- Championships (DCI produced two tapes: one of the live show and a highlights
- film). Each PBS station had the option not to broadcast it or not.
- For the 1994 season, DCI has announced that they will not produce
- a live video for broadcast on PBS. Instead, there will be closed circuit
- sites scattered across the country where people can go to watch the four hour
- DCI Finals broadcast. DCI is planning to produce a two hour highlights video
- that will be made avaiable to PBS stations later in the fall.
-
- 5.6 How does the judging work?
- For 1994, DCI has moved from a nine judge system to a seven judge
- system. There will be 4 music judges and 3 visual judges broken down
- as follows:
-
- GE music 20 points
- GE visual 20 points
- Ensemble music 15 points
- Ensemble visual 15 points
- Percussion performance 10 points
- Brass performance 10 points
- Visual performance 10 points
-
- The most noticable changes are that visual captions are worth 45
- points, up from the previous 35 points allocated under the old system. The
- GE music and Ensemble music judges will be each be judging the merits of both
- percussion and brass lines.
-
- 5.7 What is a legal bugle?
- For competitive purposes (i.e. at DCI competitions), a bugle is
- defined as follows: "By the word `bugle' as used herein is meant a
- straight bell-front brass instrument pitched in the key of G. All
- instruments shall have no more than three (3) valves except for the
- contrabass bugle, which may have four (4)."
- This is quoted from Drum Corps World (January, 1990) which quotes
- the rule book (Rule 4.3.1). This rule was passed at the 1989 DCI
- Rules Congress. The rule used to say exactly the same thing, except
- that all instruments (even contrabasses) could have only two (2) valves.
- There is an interesting history to what was allowed on the field.
- At first only valveless bugles were allowed. Then one-valved, piston-rotor,
- and then two-valved were allowed, in that order. In fact, there used to be
- only soprano bugles until the baritone bugle, mellophone bugle, French horn
- bugle, and the contrabass were invented.
-
- 5.8 What kind of percussion is allowed?
- Rule 4.1.1: "All acoustic percussion membrane and keyboard
- instruments (those not needing electricity to generate sound) are legal."
- Rule 4.1.2: "Percussion keyboard instruments may use resonators.
- A self-contained motor that is battery-powered is permitted to be used
- on vibraphones only. This motor is not to be used for amplification,
- but rather to produce a vibrato effect by turning the resonator
- propellers. Electric amplification is not allowed."
-
- 5.9 What is the "pit area"?
- It is the area between the 35 yard lines on the front side line
- ten feet deep (outside the playing field, toward the audience). Basically,
- this area is an extension of the field. Any piece of equipment can be
- brought into or out of the pit area to or from the "normal" playing field.
- Corps typically use this area to place stationary percussion
- instruments, such as chimes, keyboard instruments, tympani, gongs,
- etc. It is also used sometimes to store color guard equipment. Some
- drill writers have used the pit area for performers to march through.
-
- 5.10 How long is each show?
- Each corps' performance is supposed to last between 10 and 11 1/2
- minutes. There is a 0.1 point penalty for each 6 seconds above or below
- these limits. A typical show consisting of 7 corps will last about three
- hours. Usually, the winner of the show will do an encore performance while
- standing still (i.e. not marching). These kinds of performances are
- known as standstill performances.
-
- 5.11 What are all those strange abbreviations and/or nicknames people
- keep using when writing about drum corps?
-
- It's a lot easier to use an abbreviation or nickname than to have
- to type the entire corps name every time. Here is a short table of
- abbreviations:
-
- 'Coats or BC = Bluecoats (Canton, OH)
- BD = Blue Devils (Concord, CA)
- BK = Blue Knights
- Boston or BAC (Bad Ass Crusaders?) = Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA)
- Cadets or Garfield or CBC = Cadets of Bergen County (Hackensack, NJ)
- (they used to be called the Garfield Cadets until 1989)
- Cavies = Cavaliers (Rosemont, IL)
- G-Men = Glassmen
- MS or Madison or Scouts = Madison Scouts (Madison, WI)
- Magic = Magic of Orlando (Orlando, FL)
- PR or Phantom = Phantom Regiment (Rockford/Loves Park, IL)
- SCV or Vanguard = Santa Clara Vanguard (Santa Clara, CA)
- Sky = Sky Ryders (De Soto, TX)
- Spirit = Spirit of Atlanta (Atlanta, GA)
- Star = Star of Indiana (Bloomington, IN)
- Suncoast = Suncoast Sound (Pinillas Park, FL)
- VK or Velvet = Velvet Knights (Anaheim, CA)
- X-Men = Crossmen
- 27 = the 27th Lancers (a former open class corps from Revere, MA
- now an alumni corps)
- In DCA:
- Cabs = Caballaroes
- Sky = Skyliners
- Emp. or Empire = Empire Statesmen
- Buccs = Reading Buccaneers
-
- Other abbreviations include:
-
- contra = contrabass bugle
- bari or bary = baritone bugle
- sop = soprano bugle
- DM = drum major
- GE = general effect
-
- 5.12 Why do people keep misspelling things?
-
- Here is a small set of things people commonly misspell.
-
- Bluecoats (the corps from Canton, OH)
- Sky Ryders (the corps from DeSoto, TX)
- drum corps (TWO words)
- corps (singular, pronounced "CORE")
- corps (plural, pronounced "CORZ")
- corps' (possessive, pronounced "CORZ")
-
- There is no such word 'corp'.
-
-
- 5.13 How to join a drum corps Donald Chinn
-
- My experience with drum corps has been basically as a spectator.
- However, I did march in high school marching band (so I have *some*
- appreciation for how hard the stuff that drum corps do really is :-).
- Anyway, here's the extent of my knowledge on how to get involved.
-
- Junior corps (Blue Devils, Phantom Regiment, etc.) march people who
- are 21 or younger. A person "ages out" of corps when they become 22. You
- can legally march at the DCI Championships if you do not turn 22
- until after June 1st of a given compeitive season.
-
- If you are 22 or older, then you can still play in a Senior
- drum corps. Senior drum corps are governed by DCA (Drum Corps Associates).
-
- If you are still under 22, then the typical way to get involved in
- drum corps is to contact a drum corps directly. So the big decision
- is: "Which drum corps should I join?" It depends. If you want to
- have a reasonable chance at winning the championships, then joining
- the Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, Cadets of Bergen County,
- Phantom Regiment, Star of Indiana, the Cavaliers, or Madison Scouts is
- the thing to do. If you want to be more involved in a smaller group
- (or less well-known), you can try some of the 13th-26th place corps,
- or even a Class A or Class A-60 corps.
-
- It seems to me, the things to consider are location, size of the
- corps, style of music, and reputation of the corps, and the chance at
- winning it all. For example, if you like jazz, then the Blue Devils
- is probably where you want to be. If you like classical, then Phantom
- is the place to be. WARNING: Tryouts for the top corps can be very
- tough, since everyone wants to be a part of a winning corps.
-
- There are basically 4 drum corps associations related to DCI that
- handle the corps in their region. These are DCE, DCM, DCS, and DCW (Drum
- Corps East, Midwest, South, and West, respectively). To find out what corps
- are in what association, you can contact the associations directly.
- See the section on "Drum corps associations" for phone numbers.
-
- DCI's address and phone is:
- DCI
- Box 548
- Lombard, IL 60148
- (708) 495-9866
-
- There are also a slew of other smaller drum corps associations:
- Eastern Massachusetts, Drum Corps New York, etc. You can probably ask
- DCI if you want more info on them.
-
- To join a corps, call up one of the associations and find out where
- the nearest corps in your area are. Or, contact a corps directly (see
- "Current active corps", part 2).
-
- Rehearsals:
- Rehearsals usually begin in the fall (this is certainly true of
- the top corps). I suspect that when rehearsals begin largely depends
- on how much money the corps has. During the winter, rehearsals mostly
- consist of camps held on the weekends (once or twice a month in the
- fall and more frequently as winter and spring roll around). However,
- not everyone shows up to these camps, especially if they would have to
- fly 1000 miles to go to one. This is one reason to join a corps close
- to where you will be living.
- The corps you join would provide you with an instrument, probably
- with some safety deposit on it. Also, most corps require that you pay a
- fee to join the corps. This is to compensate for uniform cleaning,
- equipment, food, etc. This fee can be very cheap or very steep anywhere
- from $200 to $1,000).
- When summer arrives (late May, early June), then things really
- pick up. Rehearsals can last up to 10 hours a day (or more), and the
- sun beats down unmercifully. Tan lines on the feet are not uncommon.
-
- Touring:
- Corps travel thousands of miles each summer, and the bus rides
- can be as long as 12 hours. Usually, you roll into some town at 1am and
- sleep in their high school gym for 8 hours or so (you bring a sleeping
- bag!). Food is usually prepared by volunteers for the corps. Then
- you rehearse in the day, do a show (or do laundry), and the cycle
- repeats. There are numerous parties, as well.
-
- 5.14 Rehearsal information Paul D. Herzog
-
- I marched four years (1986-1988 Colts, 1989 Bergen County) and am
- asked one question more than any other: What is a corps' rehearsal
- schedule like, both in camps and on the road?
-
- A corps consistently has their first rehearsal around the weekend after
- Thanksgiving. This camp has little actual rehearsal, and is used for the
- corps' veterans to re-acquaint and for the rookies to the get the feel of the
- activity as a whole. The actual camp schedule afterward will usually be:
-
- - 1 camp in January
- - 1 camp in February
- - 1 camp in March
- - 1 (perhaps 2) camps in April
- - 2 camps in May
-
- Most top 12 corps require all members to be "moved in" by Memorial Day
- camp, after which daily (or at least multiple times per week) rehearsals
- start. A typical camp varies from corps to corps, but nearly all corps
- have a camp from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.....here is an
- example schedule from a top-25 and a top-5 corps:
-

-
- Drummers, since the emphasis is completely on playing as a line,
- rather than individuals, will often have their own rehearsals, not as strict,
- more to get used to being around each other than to really learn the summer
- program. These rehearsals will usually split the monthly camps (i.e.
- Camp on the 1st, drum practice on the 15th).
-
- Once a corps in on the road, the schedule tends to be the same
- nearly every day, since there are shows (and for the Top 5, clinics) nearly

- A corps on the road will usually have about two days a week with no
- shows, and the day is usually devoted to a little extra rehearsal (2-3
- hours), laundry (sometimes!), relaxation time, etc. There are usually
- two or three free days over the course of a summer, where the corps will
- go to the movies, amusement parks, the ocean (I still have great
- memories of two days in Ocean City, MD), where the corps members can
- spend all their money on junk food and other refreshments (for the age-
- outs, anyway), souvenirs, and whatever other tourist traps they fall into.

- 5.15 Music for wind ensemble
-
- Corps play a wide range of music including classical, contempory,
- jazz, soundtracks, and music for wind ensemble. Original recordings of
- much of this music can be bought at your local record store. But most
- music for wind ensemble is not widely available. I have found a good
- source of music for wind ensemble. They are:
-
- West Coast Music Service
- P.O. Box 3501
- North Ft. Myers, FL 33918-3501
- 813-731-0565
-
- I have ordered CDs and LPs from them, and they have been
- fine. They have almost everything that has been written for
- wind ensembles available, mostly performed by university bands.

- 6.1.1 The DCA Story.
-
- In September of 1963, five men, Henry "Lefty" Mayer (NY
- Skyliners), George Bull (Yankee-Rebels), Randy Roy (Reading
- Buccaneers), Pete Burns (Conn. Hurricanes), and Carmen Cirlincione
- (Archer-Epler Musketeers), met in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania to
- discuss the possibilities of creating an organization dedicated to promoting
- senior drum and bugle corps. This was the start of the Drum Corps
- Associates a.k.a DCA and it continued the legacy created by the V.F.W.
- which discontinued its senior championship after 1962. The first corps
- to become charter members were the Buccaneers, Hurricanes,
- Interstatesmen, Musketeers, Rockets, Skyliners, and Yankee-Rebels. Two
- years later, the first DCA championship was help at Milford, Connecticut.
- Six of the seven charter corps competed on September 11, 1965, the
- Reading Buccaneers won. Today, 30 years later, the DCA still thrives.
- Many corps have had the honor of being DCA Champions.

- 6.2 Parade Corps
-
- 6.2.1 Ballad of the Unsung Heros
-
- Parade corps are almost always senior by nature. As the class
- name implies, these corps march in parades or perform at "standstills."
- Although many drum corps nuts do not consider these units as part of the
- continuum, they do provide an alternative for people who want to be part
- of drum corps, but cannot afford the time the field (DCA) units demand.
- Parade corps generally practice 3 hours a week. The atmosphere is not
- stressful and of all the types of corps, it is the most family oriented.
- Most parade corps will not travel more than 2 hours from their HQ so it
- is easy to pack up the family and drag them to the various parades. Many
- of the DCA corps started as parade corps, it is a great way to start a corps'
- economy.

- 6.3 Rehearsals
-
- It should be pointed out that senior corps are comprised of people
- who are, for the most part, not young anymore. They are people who have
- careers under way, families in the making, houses needing painting, and
- all the other wonderous (more like ponderous) things that happen on the
- threshold of "mid-life." This reduces the amount of time that senior
- corps have to operate. Serior corps members are the epitome of the
- weekend warrior and the weekend starts 8:00 pm Friday and ends
- somewhere near 8:00 pm the following Sunday. There are a few breaks so
- the members can revel in some old fashioned comradeship.
- The senior season runs from mid April (first of the senior
- versions of camps) to Labor Day weekend (the ever lovin' Championship
- weekend).
